I met Cactus and I hadn't really known him a long time
I was just a boy and I had a lot of growing to do

He'd say, then he'd wink and we'd laugh

The summer was long that year and we loved it
He told me stories, secrets, all of the time
And then, I'd tell him some of mine
And we'd both laugh

Cactus was pouring the drink and the whisky
They put him out and when I said he should quit he got mad
He said it was all that he had
Except for one friend

Now he was nowhere around when I went up
To see if he wanted to walk into town
